NRL outlines how the Perth Bears' marquee player exemption works

The NRL has outlined how the Perth Bears' marquee player exemption will work. The rule allows the Bears to arrange additional payments of up to 20 per cent of one player's salary, through a new or existing sponsor, that won't count towards the salary cap. To qualify, the player must be on a top 30 contract, earn at least $1 million a season, and be one of the club's two highest-paid players when he signs. The exemption is available for one player per season in 2027, 2028 and 2029, can be used on a different player each year, and must be approved by the salary cap auditor, whose decision is final. Matt Burton is in line to be the first beneficiary.
