Perth Bears preparing $1m-a-season offer for Matt Burton
The Perth Bears are set to make a major offer to Matt Burton, worth around $1 million a season. The deal would run for at least four years from 2028, with a fifth season added if Canterbury agree to release him early so he can join Perth for their debut season in 2027. The Bears see Burton as a running five-eighth alongside former Bulldogs halves partner Toby Sexton, and he would become the club's first marquee signing. Canterbury have given Burton permission to explore his options but hold last rights, and are still weighing whether to value him as a centre or five-eighth. The Bears' tight salary cap means they won't be chasing Sam Walker or Hudson Young.
