Wayne Bennett rules out Rabbitohs move for Sam Walker as Cowboys speculation grows

South Sydney coach Wayne Bennett has ruled out a move for Sam Walker, saying the Rabbitohs cannot fit the Roosters halfback under their salary cap without losing another player. Souths already have Latrell Mitchell and incoming recruit Payne Haas on big deals and are finalising an extension for David Fifita. Instead, speculation has turned to North Queensland, where Walker’s younger brother Tyson recently re-signed. A potential trade with Tom Dearden, who has been linked to a move to Sydney for family reasons, would be financially straightforward, with Walker on $1.05 million and Dearden on $1 million next season. The Cowboys insist Dearden will see out his contract, and Walker’s camp are in no rush, with the halfback happy to honour his Roosters deal for 2027.
