NRL market value appeals could revive PNG Chiefs' pursuit of Hudson Young

The NRL will allow players to challenge the market value it assigns them, a move that could revive the PNG Chiefs' interest in Canberra back-rower Hudson Young. The Chiefs withdrew their $900,000-a-season offer after the NRL ruled they would have to count Young in their salary cap at his market value, initially set at $1.1 million and later reduced to $1 million. The rule is designed to stop PNG using its tax-free status to sign players for less than they are worth. ARLC chairman Peter V'landys said the NRL would consider exceptional circumstances, while RLPA boss Clint Newton argued the policy unfairly restricts where players can choose to play. Canberra have extended their offer to Young from three years to four in a bid to keep him.
