V’landys reveals plan for 22-team NRL in next broadcast cycle
ARLC executive chairman Peter V’landys has revealed plans to expand the NRL to 22 teams in the next broadcast cycle, which begins after 2034. The competition will stay at 20 teams for the remainder of the current TV deal, with the 20th club still on track to enter in 2029 and an announcement expected before Christmas. V’landys said a larger league would allow for conferences, fewer rounds and better scheduling around Origin and internationals. He also confirmed a deadline of October 15 for Super League clubs to accept a $57 million NRL investment package, which hinges on the London Broncos being promoted next year. The NRL recorded record revenue of $845.6 million this year and is expected to pass $1 billion by 2028. V’landys added that he would oversee a succession plan during his three-year term as executive chair.
