NZ Rugby takes NRL to court over PNG Chiefs name

New Zealand Rugby has launched court action against the NRL in a bid to force the PNG franchise to drop the Chiefs name, which is shared with the Super Rugby side. NZ Rugby argues the name could create confusion and cause damage in the sporting landscape. ARLC chairman Peter V'landys has vowed the NRL will fight the case, pointing out that the Auckland Blues adopted the NSW Blues name in 1996 without seeking approval.
